Family Weekend is an annual tradition here at VCU in which new students and their families get to know more about what it means to be a VCU Ram!
This year’s Family Weekend will take place on September 26-28 and will feature activities such as tours of the campus and tours of Richmond, as well as informational sessions, family brunches, and live entertainment!
Some of the highlights of family weekend include:
1. Family Picnic
The Family Picnic will be at Bear Lawn on MCV Campus from 4-6:30pm on Friday September 26 and will include horseshoes, board games, the band “Second Nature” and delicious food from Jonah’s!
2. First Year’s Got Talent
The Office of New Student Programs Hosts its 4th annual “First-Years Got Talent” program showcasing the many talents of VCU’s first year students! This event will be hosted in the Commonwealth Ballroom in the University Student Commons at 7pm on September 26. Light refreshments will be provided and audience members will have an opportunity to win a variety of prizes!
3. First Year Parent and Family Breakfast
The Office of New Student Programs invites parents of new students to attend the First Year Parent and Family Breakfast! You and two other guests can have breakfast at Shafer at 8:30, 9:15 and 10am, free of charge on Saturday September 27, as well as have the opportunity to network with other parents, VCU students and staff!
4. Richmond City Bus Tour
Show your parents all of the greatness that is RVA! Families can meet at the Floyd St. entrance of the University Student Commons on September 27 for an hour long tour of Downtown Richmond, MCV, Monument Ave. and Carytown! Tours will run every half an hour and snacks will be provided! Tours run from 10am-2pm!
5. Division of Student Affairs, Friends and Family Appreciation Tailgate
How cool would a selfie of your dad and Rodney the Ram be? Families can come to the Commons Plaza on Saturday, September 27 from 2-4 pm for free food, music from the VCU pep-band and a visit from Rodney the Ram!
6. A Capella Concert
So VCU may be the real life version of Pitch Perfect? This concert will bring together the diverse singing talents of several VCU musical student organizations. The performances will include a capella and music accompanied spiritual, contemporary, and old school Pop and R&B tunes. Come out with your family to the Commons Plaza at 5:30 pm on Saturday, September 27 for a great a capella experience for you and your family!
7. Freshman Scholars BBQ
Freshmen who have received either a Presidents, Provosts or Dean’s Scholarship are invited to attend a BBQ dinner compliments of the VCU Alumni. Students and up to two guests may attend free of charge. Others will be $10 per person. Invitees will receive an invitation to their home address as well as an email invite. 8. Fall Block Step Show
This event showcases the tremendous stepping ability of VCU chapter members and is also an illustration of the dedication and hard work that every member puts into his or her membership. 29 years later, the Fall Block Step Show is the largest and most visible fraternity and sorority related event on campus! You and your family are sure to love this exciting VCU tradition at the Siegel Center at 6pm on Saturday, September 27!
9. Tom DeLuca Hypnotist Show
Known on college campuses across the country, Tom’s hypnosis show is highly interactive, hilarious, and leaves his audience talking about it for days! Come and see the show… or BE the show at the Commonwealth Ballroom on Saturday, September 27 at 8pm!
10. Open Gym at Cary St Gym
Throughout the whole weekend, the guest fee for using the Cary St gym will be waived! Show your family the enormous rock wall, one of the many swimming pools, take your mom to a Zumba class, and much more! This is a must see for all visiting family members!
