Where to Go and Eat during Family Weekend 2016

Welcome families! Family Weekend 2016, which runs from Sept. 30 through Oct. 2, is a wonderful time to see what it is like to be a Ram.

Family Weekend is an opportunity for parents to see their student’s campus life, meet their friends and enjoy the VCU community.  Whether this is a first campus visit or a return to familiar grounds, the possible experiences and potential memories to be made at Family Weekend are endless!

With so many activities and events planned, as well as a whole host of things happening around Richmond, where would one start? Here are the highlights of what events to attend, Richmond things to do and where to eat during Family Weekend 2016:


Events to Attend:

Campus Sustainability Day

Friday, Sept. 30; 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Commons Plaza

Campus Sustainability Day is a national celebration of sustainability in higher education. The goal of the event is to spread awareness about the steps VCU is taking to create a more sustainable campus and contribute to a healthy environment. Check out all the great sustainability initiatives at VCU.

Rams Got Talent Show

Friday, Sept. 30; 7-9 p.m.

University Student Commons, Commonwealth Ballroom

VCU is full of talented students who can’t wait to show what they have to offer. Come see students sing, dance and wow the crowd in VCU’s annual talent show. There will be popcorn, drinks and door prizes.

Paint in the Plaza

Saturday, Oct. 1; 10 a.m. – Noon

Commons Plaza

Participants who registered for Paint in the Plaza will be able to create a piece of art to take home. Two artists will walk through painting a masterpiece using step-by-step instructions. There will be one piece for younger audiences and a different piece for a more seasoned crowd.


Mini Medical Family Day

Saturday, Oct. 1; Noon- 2 p.m.

Larrick Student Center

Participants who registered for Mini Medical Family Day; get ready for a free, fun and family-friendly event. While supplies last, children will receive a backpack, snacks and giveaways. Parents will be given health information and free blood pressure checks. Activities include story time, face painting, balloon artists and more. There will be complimentary parking in the 8th Street Deck next to the Larrick Student Center, and passes will be given out to drivers after attending the event. This event is sponsored by VCU Community Engagement; Division for Health Sciences Diversity, Graduate School; Office of Multicultural Student Affairs; Recreation Sports; University Student Commons and Activities, VCU Bookstore and VCU Libraries.

Family Game Show Night

Saturday, Oct. 1, 7-9 p.m.

University Student Commons, Commonwealth Ballroom

Test skills and win prizes at Family Feud and Minute to Win It games for the whole family at Family Game Show Night. This event is sponsored by the Activities Programming Board.

Family Weekend 5k Run/Walk

Sunday, Oct. 2, 8 a.m.

Commons Plaza

Help raise money for Rams in need in the inaugural Family Weekend 5K Run/Walk. This course will take participants through VCU’s unique campus and allow them to see some of the art and historic landmarks Richmond is famous for. Registration is required for this event and covers snacks, a t-shirt, official timing for the run and a charitable donation to the Ram Pantry which exists to address food insecurity by providing in-need VCU students with healthy, culturally appropriate emergency food.

Where to Eat:

There are so many food options in Richmond and on the VCU campus the options are endless. Family Weekend is the perfect chance for hungry families to try something new.

The Village Cafe

1001 W Grace St, Richmond, VA 23220

The Village is located right in the heart of VCU’s campus. A fan favorite of VCU students, the Village’s selection of burgers, sandwiches, pastas, pizza and more are sure to satisfy everyone! Be sure to check out their milkshakes as well.

821 Cafe                               

821 W Cary St, Richmond, VA 23220

821 Cafe is a great local spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their menu and cute small town  atmosphere is sure to satisfy the entire family.

Galaxy Diner

3109 W Cary St., Richmond, VA 23221

Galaxy Diner, located in Carytown, has an outer space feel to it and themed booths and menus. Most people go here for the galaxy atmosphere, but they have out-of this-world food!

Mellow Mushroom

3012 W Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221

Located in Carytown, Mellow Mushroom is another VCU favorite. The pizzas are amazing, and the indoor antique decorations are beautiful!

Kuba Kuba 

1601 Park Ave, Richmond, VA 23220

This Cuban restaurant is located in The Fan district and features home-style Cuban dishes for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner.
