Give A Day RVA 2017

Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) 20th annual day of service drew nearly 300 students on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, to “Give a Day” to the Richmond community.

Give a Day RVA – VCU Edition, sponsored by University Student Commons and Activities’ Center for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement and VCU Honors College, promoted campus and community unity by allowing students to come together to give back to the surrounding neighborhoods through service projects.

This year, VCU students worked alongside more than one thousand Richmond locals to volunteer for the regional service day – Give a Day RVA – hosted by HandsOn Greater Richmond. Students volunteered across nine different sites, including RamPantry, the Monroe Park Learning Garden, Friends of Bryan Park, Oregon Hill Association, Evergreen Cemetery, Hart Havens and the Bainbridge and Garber Street community gardens. Student site leaders from the VCU Honors College guided their peers through service projects and facilitated group reflections on the experience.

The goal of the program was to engage VCU students with the Richmond community through critical service-learning experiences.

“It is wonderful to have this opportunity for community members to engage with VCU students. We’re living side by side in these neighborhoods and we’re sharing the community, so it is important that we create opportunities for connection,” Nicole Patterson, Coordinator for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement, said.
