“Welcome Week” is now Weeks of Welcome!

Beginning in the Fall 2019 semester, Virginia Commonwealth University’s traditional “Welcome Week” will become Weeks of Welcome (WoW), extending the first week celebration to several weeks from Monday, Aug. 12 (the beginning of RAM CAMP) to Sunday, Oct. 6 (the end of Family Weekend). WoW will offer opportunities for VCU students to engage with peers, faculty, and staff, as well as highlight resources to foster a sense of belonging and increase awareness of tools for success.

Extending Welcome Week into this weeks-long program of campus events, open houses and resource fairs will allow new and returning students more time to get to know, or become reacquainted with, our campus and all VCU has to offer.

“What we tried to do in the past was have more than 200 events in one week, and what we found was that students were sometimes just trying to run between events and weren’t really getting to know the campus,” David Greene, director of University Student Commons and Activities, said.

“Weeks of Welcome takes that one week of events and spread it into multiple weeks, which will allow students a greater opportunity to engage,” Greene said.

“Whether you are a new or returning student, we want you to be engaged. We want you to know VCU isn’t just a place where you take classes: it’s a place where you learn to be more, not just be a student. You’re becoming a better citizen, you’re becoming a different kind of friend to different types of people. You’re expanding what you see everyday,” Greene said.

The wide range of events being held for students during Weeks of Welcome is indicative of the diverse backgrounds and interests that are present in our VCU community. WoW’s intent is to provide students the opportunity to enjoy themselves, integrating into the Ramily at their own pace, while learning how to to take advantage of all our campus has to offer.
